§ 2-41. HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION.

  • 2-41.1 Authority to Establish Commission. Pursuant to the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, N.J.S.A. 10:5-10, the Borough of Sayreville shall have a Human Relations Commission to aid in effectuating the purposes of the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination.

    2-41.2 Appointment of Commission. The local Commission shall consist of fifteen (15) individuals who shall serve without compensation. The members of the Commission shall possess a diversity of qualities, religious beliefs and social experience. Each member shall be appointed by the Mayor, with the advice and consent of Council, for a term of three (3) years and until his successor is appointed and qualified.

    2-41.3 Purpose; Policies and Programs. The local Commission shall attempt to foster, through community effort or otherwise, goodwill, cooperation and conciliation among the groups and elements of the inhabitants of the Borough and is empowered to make recommendations to the Borough Council for the development of policies and procedures in general and for programs of formal or informal education that will aid in eliminating all types of discrimination based on race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, gender, sexual orientation or physical or mental handicaps of any individual or because of the liability for service in the Armed Forces of the United States. The local Commission shall have such further powers and duties as may be provided by the said Law Against Discrimination of the State of New Jersey and by amendments thereto.
